To begin to understand “Search Engine Optimization” it is important to realize that the words on your site are its most important asset. Here are some important concepts:
- Google robots are your most important visitor.
- Google robots only read words, not images
- Google robots try to read the words on your site to determine what your business does
- Google recommends at least 400 words of description on every page
- Google robots will determine what your business does by the “important keyword phrases” it finds in those 400+ words (especially the homepage)
- It will identify “important keyword phrases” by finding phrases that are links or headings
- It will put special emphasis on keyword phrases that links to pages whose name matches the phrase that was linked
This should give you some insight into how we might “optimize” your site so that it is very easy for the Google robots to understand the nature of our business and website. This paints a picture where every webpage of your site, contains linked keywords to other pages.
I recommend that you work with us to create your top ten keyword phrases based on the search behavior of your potential clients and how they reach your competitors. This top ten list will inform how all the content is written on your entire site, as well as dictate how the entire site is organized.
This list should also somewhat dictate the page names used in your navigation bar” or “menu” at the top of your site, and it will be crucial in helping you describe your business and services in the rest of your site’s content. Your other linked keyword phrases should be both repetition of the menu and of your top ten phrases. It should also include variations of those keyword phrases to help capture searches done by potential clients who use slightly different terminology for your services that you have used for your menu bar.
If the content (words) on your site (especially the homempage) does not contain your top ten keyword phrases, or anything about your products or services, you will be making it difficult for Google robots to connect your site to potential clients who are searching for you.
Most successful websites are continually adding content to the site on a regular basis by creating posts (like this one) or new pages. This means that it’s best to understand a successful website as one that is constantly growing and changing. We James Web Design creates a website for you, we train you to add new content in the future to keep your website fresh, vital and visible in Google searches.
